low oil pressure after s/c install
low oil pressure after s/c install
Well, we compleated the supercharger install last night around 12:30am. It started right up and we made sure that there werent any leaks. We found a small coolant leak but it was ok. What did bother me was the fact that we werent seeing a nice stream of oil coming down the oil return line from the s/c back down to the oil pan. We did see some but not steady stream. Also after driving it for 30 minutes last night, I noticed my oil pressure was a bit on the low side. Usually at idle I get about 18-20psi of oil pressure and going about I get about 40 maybee a little less. Well when coming home last night I noticed while at a stop that I was a little belowe 20psi and when the light turned green and gave it some gas I noticed as I accelerated(sp) oil pressure didnt want to go up above 20psi. At 50 mph I was still at 20psi or a little above. I dont know whats going on but the lact of oil pressure scares me. I'll check oil level again when i get home. Any suggestions?
When diagnosing oil pressure problems, it is important to verify guage readings with a second mechanical guage.
When I built a motor for my last car, it kept blowing oil filters off of the engine. The stock dash guage only showed 50 - 60 psi, though. Upon hooking up a mechanical guage, I found that the pressure was really going to 200+ psi (!). By the way, Loctite had found its way into the oil pump internal bypass valve and froze it shut, so there was no internal limit on oil pressure.

I will try that also and probably switch to a thicker oil like 10w30 and see how that will work.
Any other suggestions, Cold the loss of oil pressure be due to the fact that im also feeding the s/c with oil as well?, or could it be that that im losing viscosity as the car warms up?.
If there is no internal problem in your blower, the oil flow to it should be very small, so it shouldn't affect your oil pressure.
With my T-trim, my oil pressure is around 20 psi at idle and 60 psi from 1500 rpm and up.

Unless, of course, the addition of a supercharger caused detonation, which beat-up a main bearing, which causes oil pressure to drop.
Hope not, though. . .
