Intercooled or boost cooler

My 93 camaro was already built and supercharged when I bought it..I shortly thereafter warped a head. Most likely due to the fact that it wasn't intercooled...iv seen that its pretty tough putting a intercooler in the already LT1 packed engine bay. Will it be worth it to stuff a intercooler in there or should I be fine with doing like a meth/water injection system which I also think wud look cleaner. Thanx guys

Re: Intercooled or boost cooler

There are plenty of guys who have put the intercooler in the front bumper- including myself.

The boost cooler will help you keep your boost levels as you typically lose a lb or two going through an intercooler- but then you have to maintain your water level. Also if something goes wrong with it under throttle you will be more likely to hurt something.

Personally I like the look of a FMIC- I think it makes things look mean...

Disregard the stupid fog lights- those are no longer there as they didn't go with the rest of the car. I thought they would grow on me but they never did...

Re: Intercooled or boost cooler

Just an Ebay intercooler- works fine and I don't see much boost lose with it, although I have yet to run high boost numbers- still in the single digits.

I did all the work myself- much rather rip it apart and learn than pay someone and pick it up a week later not knowing the amount of work that went it...

Re: Intercooled or boost cooler

An intercooler is the way to go. It can cost less than methanol, and doesn't run out and has no electrical system or moving parts that will eventually fail. It's always working whether you're in boost or not. The difference Mine makes is impressive. The inlet is quite warm, almost hot, and the outlet is cold metal.

The hardest part is routing the piping. Mounting the intercooler is the easy part. You can cut large airflow holes in the bumper and put the IC in front of it. You don't have to cut into the bumper to mount the intercooler like I chose to.

BTW, intercoolers are all 1 core, and range from 3" to 4" thick cores; my core is 3.5"
thick and now has a 3" inlet and 3.5" outlet to match the piping.

Here's the new pipes.
They are 3" and 3.5" instead of 2.25".

I noticed in your thread that you modified the intercooler to achieve your proper ground clearance. That is what had kept me away from doing it thus far I have no welding skills whatsoever. What would I need to tell a welder to do.

Actually i thought getting the IC exactly where i wanted it and modifying the front bumper and cover was the hardest part Once i had it where i wanted, it was just a matter of cutting pipe to get point A to B and C to D

Here's a pic of how i had setup mine->

Re: Intercooled or boost cooler

From A to B (blower to inlet IC) and C to D (outlet IC to intake manifold). BTW, i'd recommend a 4" core that's what i have pictured. For some reason the original 3" I installed was too restrictive.

Re: Intercooled or boost cooler

Core thickness isn't as big a factor as core surface area. A 3" core with some amount more surface area will have less restriction and cool more efficiently than a smaller 4" core. Heat exchangers are all about surface area.

There's really no reason to not use the thickest core that you can fit and find for a reasonable price.

Nobody reworks intercoolers (except me lol). The idea is to buy one that fits. Get one shaped like ours with the inlet/outlets at the very bottom of the tank, this way you can move the IC all the way up until the inlet/outlet hits the frame rails/bumper (also if you mount the IC on the front of the bumper it allows the pipes to clear the frame rails/bumper).

Yeah its a BOV. They require vacuum on the small port AND boost against the valve to open. They are used with superchargers too. They give air somewhere to go when you chop the throttle, it keeps the system from working against itself. and Roots blowers have a built in bypass valve which is similar.

Check this video out of a BOV on a supercharged corvette
