Help Valvetrain Problem!!!!
I have a procharged 1993 camaro with a 355ci engine with stock ported heads. 224/236-114 .555 lift on the exhaust intake is slightly lower then that number. I have comp cams 987 springs withe 740 retianers and comp roller rockers withe guide plates. I have comp cams .531 teflon valve seals well I did. 10psi boost long tube headers and flomaster withe off road y pipe after 1200 mi on new engine it was using a quart every 500 mi or so of 5w-30 oil Valve train was a little noisy so i decided to adjust valves and low and behold i get valve covers off and i have see pieces of plastic turns out all of my exhaust valve seals are pushed up on the valves intake are fine heads had high performance valve job done. What gives to much exhaust back pressure or to big of backfire which has happend a few times but not alot need answer fast from as many as possible
thanks

Not enough retainer-to-valve guide clearance. Pretty much the retainer to smashing the seals and thats why they are moving around and im sure theres pieces in the oil pan as well.
Solution you ask? Your not gonna wanna hear this but the heads really need to come off and you prob. gonna end up buying .100 longer valves to fix the problem (gets the retainer farther away from the guide to keep from smashing it again).
Or what you can do as long as you dont mind checking/adding oil every few days or week is take the valve springs off the exh. and take the valve seals out. Its harmless but it will smoke a small amount...only sometimes. My 79 did it (same prob. as you but I didnt find out until I pulled the heads off). Some say its actually better b/c the valve guide gets more oil down it/less friction.
Thats what I would do until you have something more major than this happen...then you can put the longer valves in to really FIX the problem instead of band-aiding like I suggested.

No,exhaust pressure has absolutely nothing to do w/ it.
Dont care what Comp says...ive been there and done that and thats what happening. Comp is pretty good about knowing stuff...but the guy on the phone can sit there and tell you it works all he wants but probably has never done anything to the motor your working on.
If they are ground down then its either not ground enough or maybe the push rod on the exh. side is too long. Have you checked your valve lash?
When you told Comp about the problem whatd they say? Whatd they say after you told them the valve guides were ground down and its still happening.

I had not contacted comp yet But i will tell you this a race engine stop put heads together. I am replaceing them now with vinton seals rubber instead of plasticy stuff i will tell you this when i move the valve down 555 of an inch and hold retainer where it is supposed to be i have about .200 of an inch
It could be that the seals are being installed right. Some on the SBC's you have to use a socket and a hammer to lightly hit them into place...may want the ask your "race shop" about that.
You dont have a coil bind prob. correct?
