Help me choose a turbo!!

This will be my setup
383 LT1
227/227/560/560 114 cam
ported LT1 heads/intake
6-speed conversion
PTK hot parts
a2a intercooler
want 700+rwhp

I want a turbo thats has good response, I was looking at a Garrett GT35-R Dual Ball Bearing, but I looked it upand it says it only supports 600 hp Then the next biggest Dual ball bearing I could find was a GT42-R. remember it will be a 6-speed so I dont want boost at real high rpm's. Lower the better thats why I want the DBB. Anyway some one PLEASE help me choose a turbo that will best suit my needs.
Thanks

Re: Help me choose a turbo!!

Personally, I would use an Innovative GT76 R-trim (DBB) 1.15 a/r.

A PT76 GTS would be another good choice ( no BB, and I think only available in .96 a/r)

Jose would be the guy to talk to about the Garret turbos.

Thank You, just the kind of answer I was looking for

Re: Help me choose a turbo!!

The GT42R is a nice unit, but you would have to use the PTE version, cause the GT version uses a T6 flange on the exhaust side which will not work with a standard T4 turbo header flange and the GT version comes only as large as a 74mm. The PTE version can be had with a 76mm. The ITS unit is nice, but $$ and the R-trim wheel from ITS is a bit heavy, which makes the unit a bit lazy. Both units are nice don't get me wrong, but the best bang for the buck though is the PTE-76GTS. Will spool close to the other units, and its ALOT cheaper and will make BIG power.

IM personally not a fan of Harry at precision. I personally deal with John from limit Engineering. He is a very good guy.
With that said I would got with the GT76 with the 1.15 housing as INTMD8 said. As for a dual ball bearing, I wouldnt waste the money

That makes two of us ... I will no longer do business with Harry/Precision turbo. My dealings with John at limit engineering have been *great*, and innovative turbo has also been problem free.

Re: Help me choose a turbo!!

I have been looking on forcedinductions.com for turbos. So to my understanding the Garrett GT42R both 74 and 76T will not work because of the t6 flange? I would need a Precision PTE76GTS or GTQ. The GT42R 74 and 76 T have the 1.15 AR while the precision has .96. Is that a huge difference I am still learning about turbo lingo and what these numbers mean so bear with me
Oh and the reason I want a Garrett is that I can get one for a very nice price through a friend.

Re: Help me choose a turbo!!

what kind of rwhp can a PTE76-GTS support, and how responsive is it? im kind of in the same debate right now. going single turbo this winter, looking for 800+rwhp (really would like to see closer to 900rwhp), but i dont want it to be lazy being that the car is driven on the street 99% of the time and i want that power to be there when i get on it. seems like most big hp single turbo guys run a T88, but the general opinion seems to be that its not a very good turbo for a daily driver that needs some responsiveness. going in a 3.42 geared manual car with 383 fwiw. worst case, i can go with an undersized turbo and spray it to make up any hp shortcomings but i would prefer not to have to go that route

also sorry to stray from the topic, but what EBC would you guys recommend and why? $ isnt a big issue on that, im willing to pay what i need to for an EBC with good features. mainly looking for the ability to switch between different setups for pump and race gas, and for drag radial and slick setups

Says it supports 1100hp, but like you mine will be mostly street so I want quick response also. Hope one of those GT42R's will work

Re: Help me choose a turbo!!

yeah, i have seen the PTE76 rated at 1100hp which would be plenty, but seems like about everybody i see running a single turbo at 700+ rwhp went with a 88mm and im wondering why. thats why im looking for input (im pretty turbo-retarded still). right now twins isnt an option for me due to time and $ since a kit isnt available, otherwise i would go that route and do something similar to Jim. i also would prefer not to have the amount of space being taken up that the twins do in the engine bay

Haha, I think we are building the same car for the same reasons. Im also pretty stupid when it comes to turbos compared to most people.

Re: Help me choose a turbo!!

Heres another question for you guys
Will a GT35-R work? Support 700+rwhp and be effecient enough that I wont loose boost on the top end(heard of this happening)
Can I take a GT42-R w/ a T6 flange and have a T4 flange put on it so it will work with the PTK kit?

Re: Help me choose a turbo!!

honestly i think a pte76gts would be MORE than enough for any street car..thats why i switched from a t-88..i didnt need all that top end...and i talked to jose the other day and he said a 355 with a t76 made 987(or 978..one of those)but i think 987REAR WHEEL HORSEPOWER at 23psi....now if you need more than that for a street car..theres something wrong...what the hell is someone gonna do with almost 1000rw on the streeet? good luck trying to race it and now kill yourself. not to mention it went 10.01 at 150+(tirespin)..which is good enough for me.

Re: Help me choose a turbo!!

Dude, my friend has a GT-35R on his MR2. It's not big enough for a 383. Garrett recommends it for 2.5 - 3.2 liter engines making 260 - 510 fwhp. The PT-76GTS, however, has been used successfully on 3.0 liter Supras making 1000 rwhp, so spool up on a 383 AND ultimate hp potential are good.

100 mph burnouts.

BTW, I've got a pair of PT-61s on order for my S10.
