Front mount intercooler question.

I am planning on running either a 3 or 4 inch front mount intercooler on my supercharged 95 Z. My question is, will it recieve enough air through the front bumber behind the fog lights? Or do I have to cut up the front bumber to have enough air flow here. Obviously more air flow will be attained with cutting into the bumber, I am just looking at if it will work without doing any cutting.

If you pull out the front bumper support that's behind the bumber it can be done.. But why not create more airflow? The cooler it gets the better! I'd rather cut the front bumper than pull out or cut the bumper support inside.

Re: Front mount intercooler question.

I'd like to keep the front bumber as "stock" looking as possible, and not have to see my intercooler through the front if possible. If not enough airflow can get through, then I will have to do some cutting, but I would rather not if I don't have to.

I would say cut the bumper to allow the airflow, but put a grill over it to hid the intercooler. You could also spray the intercooler black to help hide it behind the grill.

You're gonna have to cut something. Might as well let it be the bumper cover if you want to keep the support. Do a search, there are quite a few pics I found when I was looking to build my own kit. Just have to do the research and figure out which you like best.

It won't recieve enough airflow for efficient cooling unless you open up the grille. The problem is that if you cut the grille you also have to cut the bumper support. Here's mine:

Re: Front mount intercooler question.

Is there a plastic peice out there that is made to possibly direct/funnel up air to the intercooler from the bottom? Maybe one that doesn't hang too far down to cut off all airflow to the radiator, but just enough to scoop up some air flow to the intercooler, and leave enough air flow to the radiator to properly cool the motor as well? If not, this would be a good opertunity for a company to make something.

Re: Front mount intercooler question.

I'm using NACA ducts like on NASCAR cars and 3" ducting to pull air from the bottom sides of the nose and flow it over to the intercooler.

I haven't tried it yet, so i'm not sure how efficient it is, but I too don't want to hack the front end.

Do you have any pics of the NACA ducts? Will they be noticable from the outside of your car when they are installed?

Re: Front mount intercooler question.

I dont have any pics because I dont have the front end on yet. I'm making a tubular crash area like the one BMR made. You will not be able to see them from the outside as they will be drawing air from the bottom of the nose.
