Forged pistons
Forged pistons
Well it looks like Im getting more from my tax return than I thought. and i thought it would be money spent wisely if I just go ahead and get some forged pistons for th car. I want a compression level of 9:1. I will using stock heads and just want to know what brand everybody prefers. I hear alot of good things about JE but what about wiseco and those other company's. I will be running a 12# pulley with this setup so this should be alright with a compression level of 9:1 plus an alky injection kit and front mount.

SRP pistons are made from a high silicon 4032 forging. JE is made from a 2618 forging. SRP's are for every day street/strip cars. JE is more for high hp race cars. Not to say SRP cannot be used on a race car. ALso a JE can take more abuse than a SRP & can handel more power
Speed Pro Forged Blower pistons will get you to that level. They have a -22cc dish. There are 3 of us in my town that all have the same shortblocks. Stock rods, crank, and Speed Pro Forged dished pistons. No problems here, and they are relatively inexpensive at around $330 @ Summit Racing.

Ok, so I go to order my pistons through a local speed shop and he ask me if i want to go 20 or 30 over. I really didnt want to have the block bored but but he says I might as well do it just in case I have scratches in the clylinder wall. My question is if I dont have any scratches, Do i still need to have the block bored and hoaned?
If your power level is 600-700 then srp are ok. Speed pro has a new light weight forged piston which is better then their old blower slugs. Im not sure how they rate them but I would imagine similar to a srp piston. If your plans involve power in the 800+ range I would go ross or JE. Im running ross pistons in my motor now.

I agree about Ross and JE being premier brands. The last thing to scrimp on in a blower car are the pistons. Ross or JE are the way to go. There are other good pistons, but I have personal (good) experience with these two brands and that's why I recommend them.

The total engine picture needs to be ascertained if you are considering pistons.
Are you going to bore, if so, how much? 383, 396 or higher? Crank, rods, 6-inch vs 5.875", how much boost, is that your absolute max, or are you going to decide to spray? Your pistons are just one variable in your total equation. In addition to your size issues, you have to calculate your head dome size and then consider either "off the shelf" or "custom" built pistons to meet your other requirements.
Otherwise JE makes some high quality pistons in a lot of sizes that should meet your specs off the shelf. You should determine your max compression you are willing to tolerate, then figure out how to satisfy it. Build in safety and reliablility by overbuilding and overstrenghthing, don't expect a max'd engine to last very long if it is built at its stretch point.
My car is overbuilt by a mile. I could, if I had more money, change the pulley from a measly 8#, change the cam to be more aggressive (but I just passed CA SMOG!!!), run some race fuel, change my tuning for drag blasts, install some DRs, add a water cooler, etc., etc. The point is I need the car to wake up every morning, get me to work and home, and obliterate anything within 10 miles of me. Having over 450RWTQ is obscene on any street, and I am guilty of its pleasure. Thank goodness my insurance company doesn't know.

You can't beat the Speed Pro's for the price. They are a little heavier than the SRP's I believe. They looked to be a very high quality piston to me, since I installed them.
If you end up going with a 2618 piston, they require more piston to wall clearance and you'll probably get some knock when the motor is first started up. It is a stonger piston, but not as streetable as the 4032 type.

Yeah...I noticed that the newer good speed pros are made out of the same 2618 aluminum as the JE pistons. So, what makes the JE so much better then? I know my goals right now require deep -cc dish(if I do stroker) to keep cr somewhat low, but If I can get the same quality metal for a half the price..then it would be stuipd not to do that(since after all...either piston will need replaced eventually). However, has anybody ever run the speedpros with over 800hp? I know it has been done on JEs so maybe there is something that still makes JE better even though it the same metal and both are forged under the same PSI.
I plan on hitting 650 or so rwhp plus spray my 125 on top of that...but only sometimes. I realize how much power that will be so I wont get to use it all very often. Anyhow, Im waiting on my machine shop to call me back with what they have found for my applicaiton, then Ill tell them what I have found. Then Ill decide from there. Machine shops seem to be able to get way better deals on the same products so I want to see what they find foe me before I just get my own stuff. Might want to look into some local help for deals and such. Good luck.
