FI noob questions

I've look around the forums in the FI section and I see a lot of info, but I don't know enough about the stuff to put together something for my personal setup, so I have a few questions on the issue regarding my specific car.
First off, my plans are running either a turbo or supercharger. I hear supercharging is easier/cheaper so I'm thinking more that route. Now for my personal setup:
All the mods in my sig are up to date. The car has about 93-94K. I'm looking for a fairly cheap supercharger with a safe amount of boost for my engine. By safe I mean that I'll drive it fairly lightly around daily, every once in a while take it out for a race or two. Here's my basic questions list:
How much boost?
How inexpensive can/should I go?
Is it hard to install?
Will I have to make any changes to my engine setup or will it kind of bolt-on?
Any other parts I'll need?

That's pretty much it, I'm not looking for like MASSIVE power gains, but fairly significant... I guess what you would expect from a blower.
Thanks for the help and hopefully I didn't sound too stupid.

Re: FI noob questions

I used a P600b with an air-air intercooler at 8 lbs. of boost for quite awhile, no issues, on a stock engine. If cost is a factor, look to pickup a used unit at about half the cost of new.

Yeah, I was just looking at the Procharger site and I like that one, but I couldn't find a price for it. I'd like to get a new one, but I guess if I could find a reliable source for used ones I could go for that. The Vortech's seem to be a little on the expensive side but I don't really know what would be considered "expensive" for a blower.

Re: FI noob questions

ProCharger costs more than Vortech kits do because their intercooled. If you want to have it "reliable" than you pretty much have to run 6PSI or less, non-intercooled, and under around 8psi if its intercooled.

FWIW, intercooling is definatly worth the money.

And PLAN on blowing your engine up. Some guys get lucky and run for years and thousands and thousands of miles at 7 or 8 psi on the stock short block. Others have trouble lasting a few hundred miles.

Granted much of this is liely due to a poor tune but ...

Whatever you do, make sure you upgrade your fuel pump, and injectors. And definatly get a dyno tune done, or get a wideband 02 and tune it with the FMU. If you go this route, make sure you have a mail order tuner pull a few degrees of timing to help prevent detonation.

And as for fuel, only run premium through it. Your actually better off using a fuel like Sunoco's gas because its 15% ethonal ( In all their gasolienes ) and that helps to make it less resistant to detonation. Use the highest octane you can get.

And get yourself a MSD or comparible spark box. Dont forget about plugs.

Its NOT cheap to go FI. But as far as that goes, its not cheap to make anything fast. Even a N20 set up will cost you once you do all the safety/reliability mods to keep up with it.

Re: FI noob questions

Ok, thanks a lot for all that info. I had no idea that much went into it. I think I may forget the blower. I was planning on slowly putting together an engine, probably 383, and then hopefully have it ready to go in before my stocker blew up. But now that I see it costs so much and might not even last a few hundred miles, I think I'm gonna have to just wait it out on the new engine. Thanks a lot.

Hah I wasnt trying to scare you away, just saying, that is usually the difference between the guys who run for a couple years at 7-8 pounds and the guys who run for a couple days.
