Electric exhaust cut-out

I had an HPE electric cut out on my car for 2 years and loved it. Unfortunately, while drivning home from the track, with the dump closed and cruising at about 60mph, the welds on the cap let go, and the whole thing came apart. I pulled over when I heard my exhaust get loud, and found the motor hanging by a wire, the gears blown out, and the movable plate covering the exhaust gone. That was the second time the motor had come apart on the thing. It wasn't to long after that, that the car was stored for 3 years.

Now, I'm bringing it back to life with a new 383 and 15 psi procharged boost. I've done the initial tuning, and the car obviously has a lot of pressure coming through the exhaust. I think the old cut out broke, because I held the button down to close longer than it took the motor to close every time, to ensure that it was fully closed. I'm leaning toward the QTP cut out with the digital display so I always know the exact position and don't over torque the thing via the controls. Does anybody have experience any with QTP, or have any opinions? Thanks in advance.

You will probably have better luck in the exhaust section..

You're probably right, I'll re-post there. I'm nervous however about the pressure that cars with boost put off rather than N/A cars. The 2 failures I had were on an N/A motor pushing just under 400hp. I've already put down 590hp and haven't started tuning WOT. Thanks for the response.

Re: Electric exhaust cut-out

I have a QTP 3 1/2" single electric. Dumps before the axle. Std motor control. Been in use for 3+ years on a 97ss 383 D1 MM6 with about 14psi. I have had problems with the valve leaking. Found that the plate was bent on one side. Hard to believe that back pressure bent it. Took it off and rebent. Worked for a while then did it again. I removed again and added extra metal to ot for added stiffness/ section modulus. I think the heat softens the valve plate.

Motor still works good. They require some maintenance due to the fasteners getting loose from heat cycle. I like the QTP mechanism. Of course, it's the only one I have tried. Price is low @ Summit.

Motor makes great power when it is open.

Re: Electric exhaust cut-out

I have one of the original DMH ones and I knocked the motor off somehow going around a corner and got a new one at Grainger and rebuilt it. The other thing that happenned to it was leaving the track one day, I realized it wouldn't shut and was always loud - later found that the plate had fractured off and was all crystalized from hat I guess. I made a new plate at work and got ti rebuilt good as new.

Re: Electric exhaust cut-out

I went ahead and bought the QTP cut-out from Summit with the digital controller. Upon receiving it, I noticed that it seemed to be built very well. The gear housing and motor housing was built as one unit, which is where my last one had failed. The digital controller calibrates the cut out so that it knows where full open, and full close is. Now I don't have to guess when it is fully sealed (hard to tell as it is in the very back and the car is loud to begin with). I got it installed this weekend, and am very pleased so far! When the weather clears up down here, I'll take it out and see how it performs.

On a side note, I have it set to automatically close when I turn the ignition on, and I have noticed that the car starts much faster that way. Maybe that is a tuning thing....? We'll see what Ed Wright says when I send him the next data log, as he is tuning the car remotely.
