Crankshaft Thoughts

I'm in the process of having my motor built/rebuilt for the blower setup. Right now the plan is to re-use the Eagle ESP Cast crank and Eagle ESP Forged H-Beam rods. I'm not too worried about the rods, but the crank I wonder about. I'm planning on running as much boost as the car will make, and the reason I've initially decided on leaving the cast eagle crank is because I've never heard of anyone breaking a stock cast crank before, much less an aftermarket.

But, I'm starting to debate even taking the risk, so I'm wondering what you 355 guys who are running high amounts of boost (think 16+ PSI) are using?? I was thinking of giving callies a call to see if they make a 3.48 stroke dragonslayer that would work, but I'm not sure yet.

Just looking for some honest feedback. TIA

Re: Crankshaft Thoughts

I talked to several reputable engine shops (including HPE...the company I went with), and they all were under agreement that Eagle FORGED crank would work well at my goals of 800rwhp or so. I dont think you'll get that hp with the setup you ant to go with, so the Callies IMO is overkill for you. The Eagle forged crank is cheap $$ and worth the upgrade over the cast one you were looking at.

Problem it's not an Eagle crank I was looking at, it's the one with less thank 1K miles that I already have. Part of my failed AP Engineering shortblock.

I hear ya. I still suggest (if you do plan on upgrading over the cast piece), that the Eagle forged piece would be fine for you and cheap $$.

Yeah, I'm really considering it right now. Given that hte motor is completely apart, I just sent my TFS heads and LT4 manifold to LE for work, I've got a bit of time to mull it over.

I'm planning on building a 357 alcohol engine with about that much boost and I will be using a Callies Dragonslayer.

Now maybe that's overkill. For an extra hundred bucks or so, I'll take the peace of mind. Everyone else is welcome to do as they please.

Callies Compstar line is evenly matched pricewise to Eagle, but gives you a higher quality piece. We have been very pleased with the quality of the Compstar stuff and their cranks are a good "middle" alternative between a cast crank and a high end forged crank like the Dragonsalyer.

What makes the Eagle cast crank better than a stocker (rhetorical quastion)?

Re: Crankshaft Thoughts

How much abuse (ie. hp) will a stock crank take? Will it take 650 to the tires reliably?

Re: Crankshaft Thoughts

Well, not to drag this up, but I just decided to go with a Callies crank. My engine builder personally saw a eagle crank snout break off on a 3rd pull. I don't even want to take that chance.

So.....since I've decided to move to a dragonslayer, I've also decided to move to a 3.75 stroke and just do the 383. Rods are another question though. Looking at the Manley Pro Series, Lunati, or maybe the Callies Compstar 6" rods. Gotta get pricing. My project just got more pricey.

Re: Crankshaft Thoughts

One thing about the Dragonslayer (which is a fine crank) is that if you use a short rod (5.7") the counterweights need to be cut, which adds to the cost of balancing. If you are planning a short rod motor, the Luanti Sledgehammer is comparable quality and price and is made to accomodate a 5.7" rod.

We've already decided that if we go with the DS we're moving to a 6" rod. Thanks for the heads up though........which actually is giving me food for thought as I could re-use my 5.7" Eagle H-Beams that I see a LOT of guys running big power on with no problems. That would definitely save me a little cash as the "good" rods out there are freaking pricey. Actually, that's not a bad idea.

My engine builder and I were thinking of using a 6" rod for a little better torque, but......that Lunati crank at $775 in Jegs is really tempting. I think it's going to boil down to the price my guy gets me on the Callies crank. I'd only be out the $775 and clearancing for the block if I went with the Lunati........dang I hate decision making.

Don't do it just for the torque. I've actually seen dyno tests that showed the 5.7" rod to have more torque due to better mechanical advantage. If the 6" gains anything, it will be small.
