Cons to using methanol

hey guys,

ive found a lot of info on the benefits of meth injection. now id like to hear some (if any) down sides to using it.

does it damage cats, throw SES codes, blow out spark? anything. id like to hear it.

im running 5-6 psi kit and everything else is in my sig.

thank,
jeremy

also, if i go back to NA, would there still be a benefit to using meth without the SC?

No downside I am aware of to using WATER/methanol. The best injection fluid is ~1/3 methanol and 2/3 H2O.

Re: Cons to using methanol

I use the progressive "snow" kit you mentioned in your other post. It works well. The progressive set up allows you to bring it in gradually to prevent bogging, etc.
I personally use 50/50 mix. You can also use windshield washer fluid rated at -20.
As long as you use quality parts, like snow kit or alky-control, you should be fine. Low pressure/quality pumps and nozzles can cause problems due to injecting too big of droplets of water which is a bad thing.
No codes. Couldn't help you an cats- don't have them. In theory, any time you cool the intake charge you will make more power. However, I think it would just be easier/cheaper to use a cai rather than try to use a water/meth kit for NA.

The only downside I'm aware of is there is no cooling effect at idle or low boost. Not a huge issue, but you asked for cons.

i just figured that the cooler air would be worth a little something on a NA car. if i sell the SC ill be going back to my Ram air box.

could you post or email me some pics of how you mounted your snow kit?

are you running stock internals or did you go forged?

thanks guys,
jeremy

Re: Cons to using methanol

It cools the air, but it doesn't actually get denser since the Meth/water displaces the condensed air, so it won't help a NA motor much at all. The advantage comes from being able to run more timing/boost without detonation. Right now, I'm at 19 psi and 30+ deg timing with my alkycontrol kit on pump gas, but still tuning - hoping for 22 psi before it's all said and done.

The cons are a) more complication, sensors, parts to break under the hood, and b) one more parameter to tune. Mine will blow the spark out if I don't have the right combination of fuel, alky, and timing and I haven't found it to be that consistent.
