Cometics leaking, couple of questions

Hey guys,

I have a fresh rebuild, all my surfaces should be clean. A few days ago poured some oil on my roller rockers before bolting up the valve covers and now I'm seeing some oil leaking out between the top of the block and the head towards the rear of the engine.

I know cometics are netorious(sp?) for this but is there anything I can do? Maybe put some gasket maker in there, or re-torque the bolts, or will it seal once I fire up the engine??

If I know its going to leak I may just pull that one head and put my extra felpro gasket on it, but I'd hate to have to do that.

Any advice would be helpful. Thanks.

MLS gaskets require a very flat, very smooth surface to seal. I doubt it can be fixed using the methods you mentioned. You need to pull the head and use a conventional gasket, IMO.

Re: Cometics leaking, couple of questions

Well, I filled up the car with coolant during lunch today and it's not leaking coolant, so its just the oil. Its kind of weird that its only one of the head gaskets. I think I might just pull it all apart tonight and replace it, its easier now then after I get the whole engine and car back together.

Hey, is there a proper up and down side to the cometic gaskets?? Maybe mine is upside down and that's why its leaking.

Did you spray the heck out of that cometic with ultra copper spray? I believe you need to be very generous with the stuff.

Cometic's instrutctions state that the deck surface must be like a 40RA or finer finish. Most factory setups are between 60 & 100.

Hey guys,

I bit the bullet last night and swapped in the felpro. Amazingly it took me about 2 hours to get it apart and back together. I think it would have been ok for running the engine, but I really didn't want to have to deal with the leaking oil.

I used Hylomar spray on my cometics and that seems to have worked for a nice seal. Not sure why yours would be leaking oil?

That's what was used along with my SCE copper head gaskets.
