Breaking in engine with boost?
Breaking in engine with boost?
355 brand new, t70 plan on running 12lbs of boost on pump. Question is..how should I break in my engine? I know HOW im going to break it in..only question is.. should I do it with boost? or start with no boost for a few hundred miles then go to 12,or should I start out with say 4psi then go to 12psi? Any info on how I should go about doing this would be helpful.Thanks.
On the dyno, we'll usually start out at the minium wastegate setting. Usually between 3 and 6 psi to verify there are no engine problems and the tune is fairly close. By the 3rd or 4th pull, we're running 14 - 18 psi. I'm not sure how many miles that equates to, but I bet is less than 1.

When I had my 383 torn down and rebuilt it was pretty much brand new when I put it in with my D1SC. My engine builder said I would be fine to open it up after a few hundred miles as hard as I wanted it.
I drove it with it seeing under 4-6#'s of boost for about 300 miles before it got dyno tuned where it saw almost 16#'s of boost and hours of running at WOT. After the dyno runs the motor leaked a little coolant, but after stopping by the engine builders to tighten down a couple things, it hasn't leaked since and runs like a champ.

well with my car ill be running a stock PCM so it can only be set to one PSI "at-a-tune" hah...im gonna break in the engine with the "get on it" method..but I dont wanna throw 12psi at it at first...so should I get the PCM tuned for 4psi...break it in for about 500 miles on that..and then get it retuned to 12psi?
What would be wrong with keeping the Blower belt off for about 300 miles (running it N/A) and then taking it to get tuned and finally slapping the blower belt back on first time on the dyno???
This is what I plan on doing since my tuner is about 7 hours away

I think the original poster has a Turbo.
As for just leaving the blower belt off, that was how I tried (at first) to break-in my engine. In my case, the blower was a HUGE restriction w/o the belt and the car wouldn't go past 4500 RPMs when moved past 1/2 throttle. You'll have to re-do the intake tract if your blower is already installed. If you go this route, don't forget to move the vent lines for the opti.

You are fine to run a new motor with boost as long as you get a mail order tune for it. I would get the tune for the max amount of boost you will eventually have it run on. This should take care of it being setup properly to where it should be before the actual dyno tune. Then I would just take it easy on it for a good few hundred miles keeping the boost say under 4-6#'s. I have heard of guys running without the blower hooked up for the break in period before, but honestly, as long as you keep your foot out of it while still slowly going up most of the RPM band (mostly just watch out for holding at a steady RPM for extended periods of time) you will be fine.
The key is not to WOT it until you have a few hundred miles under your belt and until it gets a full accurate dyno tune.

i had called my tuner bout a 4 days ago with the same question and told me to bring the car with the setup i plan to run.(18-20 ps2) and it will be fine. thought it was weird a bit but he said thats how they do them all.
This is essentially what I have been saying. Drive the car with the setup you plan on using, just stay out of the throttle enough to keep the boost low until the motor is broken in, and you have a good/safe tune on it.
