Re: Bare minimum to run 8-10 lbs. boost safely noob questions..

I went from 14.5 to high 12's with my setup. The car was totally stock except for a few minimal mods that probably only made an extra 5-10 hp when I first took it to the track the first time. It is amazing how hard it was to get the entire system to work correctly and extra money! One guy had a stroker and 8 pounds and only made 290 hp and it appeared the car was running with no major issues. I noticed he had it as sold on his "signature" last I checked, so I assume he sold before fixing. I must have modified or replaced at least 10 things to get my car to reach the point its at. I added a 3" cutout and the Mid headers and my boost only shows 3-4 psi now. I wonder what it is truely putting out.

Good info.. I've got a 95 formula, cai, longtubes, no cats, 3" all the way back to hooker catback. Performabuilt stage 2 trans with 3000rpm 9.5" stall. 3:42 gears as far as performance stuff goes.. I would like to do heads/cam but supercharger just seems better to me. Factory like idle and crazy power when u want it..

My car does real good without the boost and I really notice it when the rpm's are over 4K. It takes a long time to even reach 2 psi, but with little restrictions I assume the extra air is coming in and getting used and exhausted quickly when you go wot. I would love to get it on a dyno, but I really feel the true test is in the 1/4 mile If you went with high flow heads and an aggressive cam with 8psi you would be in trouble sooner than later. Someone years ago said it ain't the boost that kills the engine, its the rpm's and continued use of them. By the way, I go wot all the time, except when in heavy traffic or I spot a cop.

What I can't stand about my car is the horrible top end and roll on power it has.. If I'm on it from a dead stop it's got gobs of torque and feels really fast.. From a roll not so much. I feel like a freaking civic si might get me from a roll.. The car is just damn slow in 3rd gear.. Seems like a supercharger would fix that right up!

Boost and detonation will break your ring lands and remember I said this because it is a law of physics after happening to almost every guy that ever put a blower on a stock LT1, then did something to try to get more power.

I agree that doing more to the car will increase the chances of a problem. I would be afraid of adding mods to increase the hp without making the bottom end stronger. I made sure the motor was sound and got a good tune, upgraded ignition, upgraded fuel system and proper injectors to make sure I wasn't rebuilding right away.
