Bad News

I guess after my last issues with my 396, there is still a problem with the bolck or heads. Evidentally one of them is cracked, i.e. water in the oil, and water out the exhaust. Unfortunatly I wont be able to work on it now for about another 6 months, plus I need a new block to take have all the machining done on it.

So here's what I'm left to look at for awhile, until I can get the time to pull the engine and fix it

Re: Bad News

Your looks badazz, I m not sure about the cracked head though. I would think to have oil in the coolant and have water, the hol on the head would be a little big. I mean you would be able to actually see it. I would think it would be a gasket problem. Condensation out the exaust is a sign of good combustion. What kinf of gaskets are you running?

Re: Bad News

I can relate...... How would you feel if your brand new 4340 crank breaks after only 1,570 miles of light/moderate useage without a blower attached? NEVER BUY SCAT..... Luckily, my engine was only idling at the time it snapped. It caused bent valves and pushrods but will cost about $3k to get it running again. I can't believe I paid $125 each for Cometic head gaskets, only to be used for this short timeframe.

Scat has yet to reply to my e-mails.... next will be a certified letter as I need to document everything in writing with these guys just in case it comes down to lawsuit time....

The Cometics are reusable!

I stick with Callies for cranks.

Re-usable? How'd you find that out?

Thanks

MLS gaskets are reusable, that's one of the things that makes the price acceptable.

Re: Bad News

Or so they say. My thinking is old school. It just doesn't feel right installing used gaskets. Cometic states that if there is a minimum of 0.005" rise in the perforation, they can be reused. I'll just have to reinstall them and not think twice I suppose.

It was my mistake for choosing Scat. I have replaced the crank with a Callies and as long as the engine is in pieces, I'm replacing the Scat rods with Manley floaters. Anyone interested in a set of 5.7" Scat 4340 pressed rods with only 1,570 miles on them??
