What are the advantages of headers?

Sorry for the silly question in the midst of many F-body gurus, but I'm just now getting into my car that I've had since 1997, and doing a full restore on it (albeit slowly).

What is the purpose and/or advantages of headers. I did some quick searches but nothing definitive popped up that explained what the differences are from the stock exhaust manifolds...

Equal length headers maintain the exhaust pulse spacing, therefore they don't collide and cause turbulence which robs exhaust gas velocity. If the velocity is kept high and orderly there will be a greater scavenging effect due to the lower pressure areas between pulses. So the engine will breathe easier and make more power.

It's an 8 lane highway merging down to 1 lane. If it's done in a orderly fashion, the traffic can maintain a higher speed.

One word: FLOW. An internal combustion engine is just a big air pump, so to speak. The more air/fuel that gets in and then the easier it gets out, the more efficient it will run. Therefore, more horsepower. It is quite a bit more complicated when you dig into the workings of everything together, but that is the way I see it in simple form. Good luck on your restoration.

Not to mention, if you do long tube headers, then an over-the-valve-cover spark plug wire setup, you free up a lot of space. Makes changing plugs and wires much easier and takes much less time.

Does anyone know where those spark plug wire guides and standoffs can be bought?

I have just replaced my plugs and wires with AC Delco wires. I just need the standoffs and/or looms to re-route them when I finally do a header job.

If they're stock wires, I doubt they will work with an over the valve cover set up. They're more than likely too short.

Ahh, ok. . It looks like I might have to get new wires. Not a fun job, but hey might as well if I'm gonna have it tore down that far.
