Run Straight Pipes?
Run Straight Pipes?
Just wondering if anybody ran strait pipes in their LT1. What header, and pipes. How much am i lookin at spending if I'm gonna run strait pipes with maybe Hooker headers? Which headers are the best as far as gain for an LT1? Sorry these are noob questions but I've had questions for years and just joined the forum
Depends how you plan to use the car. For a street driven car, the long tube headers (e.g. - Pacesetter, Hooker, Kooks, etc.) will generally provide very good low end torque. For a car that spends most of its time on the track, running 5,000RPM and above, the long tubes may not be ideal.
My car is a "track car", and I run AS&M mid-length headers that have been modified so the collectors run straight back, rather than requiring a Y-pipe that routes around the front of the oil pan like most shorties and mid-lengths. Extensions on the collectors, a 3" Borla XR-1 shorty on the end of each extension, and a 3" pipe straight to the rear axle, with a turndown.
Local track (Englishtown NJ) will not allow straight pipes on anything, except on Sundays and National events. My Borlas no longer meet their requirements, because mufflers must now have at least 3 baffles to qualify as mufflers. And the exhaust system must extend past the end of the driver's door, which I do meet.
I'd think running straight pipes on the street would rattle the interior to pieces and destroy your hearing, but that's a matter of personal preference, I guess. I know until I added the 3" pipes to the Borlas, running at highway speeds was pretty much unbearable.... but then I'm just a senile, old fart......
