The 96 has two cats, One on the passenger side and one on the drivers side. The passenger side is like a normal cat right before the Y pipe.
The drivers side, however, is a funny lookin thing that comes right off of the drivers side manifold and crosses over to the Y

What else do you plan to do with the exhaust? Because taking it all apart just to remove the cats would be a waste of time

You could just hollow them out, or have test pipes welded in.
