Noob True Dual Exhaust Advice

Hello everyone,

I have a 93 camaro z28 and was curious as to whether i could replace my stock catback exhaust with this custom true dual setup i have in mind...i have a budget of about 1,500 bucks (can spend more if necessary) and was planning on purchasing Pacesetters mid-length or LT headers, an x-pipe from summit, and a pair of flowmaster super 44's just for a start. Mind u, i want the exhaust to go over/under the axle and its a daily driver...Now here is where my noobness kicks in...

I have practically no knowledge of exhaust, piping, clearance or anything related to performance for that matter so, my questions are as follows:

1. What size exhaust would u guys recommend, 2.5 or 3"??
2. Whats a fair estimate on how much a setup like this would cost?
3. What benefits or drawbacks could i expect for this setup?
4. Would the super 44 mufflers fit in my setup? If not, any advice on mufflers that would fit and produce quality tone??
5. Do i have to purchase the pipe needed for the build of will the shop provide this at a cost?

Thanks in future reference to the ones that help!

P.S sorry about the novice questions, but i know nothing about this sort of stuff and have just recently been introduced to it....

Re: Noob True Dual Exhaust Advice

Despite what anyone tells you 3" is OVERKILL unless you have some incredibly radical setup that I am SURE you would have mentioned. 2.5" is plenty.

If you are starting with a stock exhaust system then your $1500 budget will be gone relatively quickly. Assuming the shop will need to fabricate hangers, weld pipe, install the headers, etc., not to mention gaskets, bolts, tips, etc. you can expect around $200. It will add up quick.

Drawbacks include but are not limited to: (usually) decreased ground clearance, decreased usable space under the vehicle, expensive, not much to gain over a typical catback/cutout configuration, possible increased rasp, etc. Benefits include more HP over stock, that typical "true dual" sound, and the novelty of having "true duals."

Muffler choice is chosen by how much space you have to work with. It really depends on your exhaust shop.

You can't expect the exhaust shop to provide the pipe at cost. They are in it for the money so of course they will mark it up a few percent.

When it comes to true duals NOTHING can be assumed since these cars were not designed for it. Fortunately they've been done countless times over the years so there are enough pictures and some how-to's scattered all over the forums. I suggest you do a search, listen to some YouTube clips of what sounds good/bad, find a setup you like, print out as many pictures as possible, then take them to your exhaust shop and let them quote you.

Re: Noob True Dual Exhaust Advice

Bassanni offers a kit for 1200 I believe and its over the axle. I just fabbed up my own on my car and its a tricky thing with 3". There are some things to consider. With big power you should work over both the rear end and suspension. I have a dana 60 and not sure if the bassanni would have went over the top. I also have a torque arm that mounts on its own crossmember and that presented two areas to work through and around. I used stainless pipe and hangers and I welded myself with stainless wire as most muffler shops dont use stainless wire. I tipped my flowmasters on an angle and they are behind the rear end. I made my setup two pieces to be able to remove without cutting and I went far enough behind tranny that it should drop out without removing exhaust for clutch changes and what not. Here is a rough price for my setup and again I went stainless. Flowmaster mandrel bends 350,xpipe 45, hangers,50, mufflers 150, band clamps 30, tips 130, I also had bought phab pipe that was to complete a dual and take it out under the axle 200( for my setup I used part of them and its thinner wall than the box of mandrels. All the above had no inclusion for labor and i also had a 15 roll of stainless wire and a 70 fill of trimix gas. Seems the flow specs I saw on pipe size was 2,5 dual was good with no restriction to 450rwhp. 4" single pipe good to 550 and dual 3" 750

Re: Noob True Dual Exhaust Advice

Here is my true dual setup. I have pacesetter long tube wrapped headers into 3" cutouts, with QTP(quick time performance) electric cutouts, one on each side. From those into 2.5" high flow cats, into a custom X pipe, into dual sweet thunder 18" mufflers, then duals over the axle out to dual 2.5" to 4"x 18" long tips. I get compliments on the exhaust just about everywhere I go. Here are the pictures:
