Need headers with less ground clearance?
Need headers with less ground clearance?
So I have pacesetter long tubes and the driver side hits the floor board. I have poly mounts in there, but it only helped 50%. Now my car was in an accident before I got it, so the frame is most likely tweaked ever so much. I'm sure that has some to do with it. But if I can lower the headers 1/2 inch, the rubbing would be gone.
I'm thinking of selling my LTs to my brother, and buying another brand that will give me the clearance I need. What brand is known for low little clearance? My car is lowered, but I can deal with a scrape once in awhile.
Or what else can I try? Poly tranny mount? Tranny mount spacer to change the angle ever so much? What about some sort of heat resistant material jammed up between the header and the floorboard? What??

Whoaa mule!!!
Here are some ideas to get more clearance.
1. Elongate or enlarge the header bolt holes to allow the rear of the header to hang a bit lower.
2. Put some spacers between the transmission cross member and the chassis to allow the motor to tip down a bit.
3. Put the car on a lift, disconnect the y-pipe, and pull the header down if you can. Get enough weight hanging on it and it should bend downward some.
My left side LPP header at the collector can easily shift up and down (bolts barely snug) 3/4" or so.

wrd1972, I'll try #2 and #3. How thick of a spacer do you think I can run safely?
GTP, I've read that there are other headers that don't give good ground clearance and that Pacesetters do. But, I'm in no hurry to remove them yet to install even more pita headers. The install was dramatic.

And was there ever a LT1 header install that was NOT dramatic. I hear crickets.

I had a clearance issue with my RK Sports headers which are near identical to the AS&M's. You will need to trim the k-member just enough to keep it from banging. If that is the only clearance issue you have your lucky. Its the steering shaft thats the PITA on RK's.
I didn't have trouble with the linkage, other than not connecting it correctly. Which left me stranded in a mcdonalds parking lot. I won't cut the car up, unless I really REALLY have to. Not that this car is a garage queen, I just don't have the skill or know of someone that has any either. I'm going to try the spacer thing tomorrow.
