Muffler Diameter

bought a Hooker Aerochamber muffler..... the 3" inlet size, and I actually needed the size smaller for I think 2.75" pipe. I got the muffler for $40 unopened in the original package. Would this hurt it to weld it up in place of the stock muffler.

You could probably get a reducer for the 3" to 2.75". for both ends.. that would be the best way to o it.. it would look alot nicer.
