Believe it or not, I want my car to be as quiet as possible at WOT. The more I can get on it without attracting attention, the more fun I can have. I own another car that just SCREAMS at WOT/high RPM, and more than once the noise has made the difference in my getting noticed by the local enforcers.

So, is there a muffler/catback that is pretty quiet at high RPM/WOT, but still has healthy idle? I'd give up 5 peak HP in the Z28 if it means I will be able to use 50 HP more around town at the same noise level! That's why I picked the Flowmaster 80 Series I'm currently running, but if there is a better choice, I'm interested.

i'm pretty sure that isn't possible, unless you rig up a device that can separate your y-pipe and headers at idle, and reconnect them at wot.

 

Something like a reverse Z06 setup would work. They have a bypass(cutout) that opens up at WOT for better flow. I Guess you could get on of those or an electric cutout and rig it up to open at idie and close while under throttle and run a stock or quiet catback.

Get a stock catback and cat and run an electric cutout for when you want it loud at idle (for your cam I suppose). Your not going to get any quieter than the stock catback unless you run TD with 2 mufflers on each side.

 

yeah true duals will give you a killer sound at idle...like no catback will.

but it still can be made to be very tame at full throttle with the right muffler setup

 

Oh, come on now. I meant RELATIVELY quiet idle. I can't believe some of you thought I meant quieter at WOT than IDLE. Although those are some creative attempts to answer what must have sounded like a pretty stupid question if that's how you interpreted it.

Different muffler styles have differerent attenuation curves vs. flow and frequency. I want to know which ones have highter attenuation at high flow & pulse amplitude, lower attenuation at low flow... Or more accurately, one with a lower falloff rate with increasing amplitude and frequency. The only way I know to do that by design is with a very large volume, but I'm sure there are variations among what is on the market already.

I frequently read 'it's quiet at idle, but screams at WOT'. So, which mufflers would you NOT say that about?

hooker mufflers are generally pretty quiet, u could run that and an e-cutout

 

get an electric cut out and keep the stock exhaust. open the cutout while idle, then close it when WOT
