Long Tube Questions

Looking at a set of 1 3/4" Jet Hots with a Hooker ORY pipe. I'm running Hooker shorties currently. I'm planning on ordering the NON emmisions header. What do I do with the pipe that connects to the intake?? Do I plug off the back of the intake?? and if so, what do I use to do this??

I would also like to hear from people that are running this set up.... plug wire clearance, installation issues, etc.

I know there will be people that will try to steer me towards Kooks..... I know they are good headers, but cannot swing that kind of cash right now.

Thank you vewry much for your input.....

You will need to block off the EGR connection at the intake manifold. All you really need to do is put a blanking plate over the hole where the EGR riser tube bolts on. If you want to remove the EGR valve from the manifold, you need a second plate. Here's one source (you need the 2 plate kit):

When you delete EGR and the AIR connections on "NON emissions" headers, you have to program the diagnostics out of the PCM to avoid codes for the missing components and lack of flows. Make sure you NON emissions headers include the O2 sensor bungs - you still need those.

I bought a set of stainless longtube headers for my 95 camaro of ebay motors 1-3\4 " y pipe and o2 bugs for $357 US Dollars, very easy to install, spark plugs easy to install and remove.I,ve seen them a while ago on ebay motors for $324 us Dollars, hope this helps.

Injuneer, Thank you for the reply. My current headers (shorties) have the O2's.... I bought the car that way. It has a speed density tune..... I understood that the O2's are not needed....... corretc??

Incorrect.

The pre-cat O2 sensors have nothing to do with whether the PCM is tuned to run MAF or speed-density. The only difference between MAF and speed-density if the way the PCM measures mass air flow. With an MAF sensor, it measures it directly from the MAF sensor. Speed-density calculates mass air flow rate by measuring MAP, IAT and using the volumetric efficiency tables and RPM.

Once the PCM has the mass air flow value, the operation is the same. It divides mass air flow by the desired A/F ratio, and sets the injector pulse width to supply the required fuel flow to match the air flow. It then looks at the O2 sensors, and makes adjustments to the pulse width calculation, based on whether it is achieving the desired A/F ratio or not.

Perhaps you meant you have an "open loop" tune?? In that case, the O2 sensor feedback would not be used to trim the injector pulse width. You wouldn't need to run the O2 sensors in that case. Downside of running that way is an inability of the PCM to make adjustments for changes to the engine that affect vloumetric efficiency, or changes to fuel that affect the density or chemical composition (e.g. oxygenated fuels used in winter climates) of the fuel.
