help with making loud exhaust noise
i thought adding flowmasters would make my car sound tough....what do headers do? and is there specific types if so whats the best and whats the best way to go with making your car sound good...thanks all help is apperciated in advance
Headers make your stock exhaust more free flowing right at the engine, like your muffler does in the back. If you have to smog, you cannot get longtubes. They can cost between $200-$400 and can cost around $800-1100 to install.
If you want it loud and to some good for cheap, I'd recommend a cutout. Its around 40$ to buy and another 40$ to get it welded in, but it's a night and day difference in sound. Here's a video of my z28 before and after the cutout.

and here's a drive by video, at about 30-40 mph.

Might want to add a "signature" with basic info about your car.... year, model, engine, trans and any major mods. That way, people can give you an answer that is specific to the car you are asking about.
thanks your right i will do that..sorry im new to this just started yesterday....ill add it for now its a 1997 camaro rs the basic 350 tranny..
are there specific types of headers? where would i be able to get them from?

A piece of pipe that you can open and close. Opened, the exhaust exits right there, closed, it runs its normal flow thru the muffler.

I put mine right before where the pipe goes over the axle. I'll try to get a pic tomorrow.

if you get a cut out be prepared to have your car reek of exhaust fumes, and sound similiar to a dump truck at idle/low rpms under load. Do your self a favor and get a good catback. i had cut outs on my cars when i was in high school (96 formula, 99 t/a) trying to be cool. That being said when you do go get headers, make sure you get a catback. my 99 t/a had hooker long tubes through the stock catback with a flowmaster replacement muffler and it sounded like ****. really raspy. I went with the hooker catback and problem solved.
The TH350 has not been installed from the factory in an f-body since the 2nd gens ended. After that Chevy went with 4 speed automatics. TH700r4, 4L60E. Is you trans a 3 or 4 speed? Being a 97 I'd guess its a 4L.
Now as for your exhaust sound. Flows and other chambered mufflers sound horrible on 6 cyls IMO. The best sounding mufflers on them are the straight through designs like Magnaflow and Dynomax. The Hooker chambered may sound alright but its relatively quiet. You'll need something that'll give it a deeper tone and kill some smaller engine rasp or else it'll sound rice-ish.
