Well this is my first post so first I would like to give everyone a very warm welcome. Just a couple days ago I put together my flowmaster setup and I couldn't be happier. I've always loved the deep throaty sound they give and with the mixture of the high tone vibration it gives off it just makes me hard. Anyway. About 4 weeks ago I purchased a 96 6 speed Z28 convertible(unfortunately.. I miss my hard top T/A).. Only thing done to er so far is B&M shifter, hypertech programmer and exhaust. Any tips on some cheap but good/effective mods I could do would be great. I'm in the Corps so I only make roughly 1500 a month. Anything would be appreciated. Again, hello and god speed. Ditching the flowmaster would be a great start.

 

No offense but I have yet to hear a flowmaster with a deep throaty sound...they all sound high pitched to me.

 

As you can see Flowmaster is not a very well thought of product in here. If you like it thats all that matters. I am getting a Magnaflow soon myself along with some Stainless works headers and Y pipe. Good luck with you Z and Thank you for your service to our country.

 

MAGNAFLOW is the way to go, but i used to run true duals and super 40s, sounded good but they rattled all the TIME

 

My car has had flowmasters since I bought it.

I think it sounds great

 

Flow Masters sound okay, but they don't flow all that well- if you want sound, they will work- if you want performance you might want to look elsewhere-

Throttle-body by-pass, cold air intake, maybe some form of header- easy to pick up more horses on the LT1- Good luck-

 

Just keep the flowmaster for now... You can replace the muffler later if you desire... you don't have to get rid of the pipes.

First things to do is to give it a tune up if it hasn't had one already. Then relocating the AIT sensor and a TB bypass are 2 cheap and easy things to do. Save up for a CAI, it is worth it. You can usually pick one up used but new ones are around $200.

There are so many things you can do to make the car handle better, be safer and more fun. Some of the basic things should be enough to get your hands dirty and realize that the LT1 is as much fun to work on as stepping bare foot on a tack, or sitting on a porcupine. It will be all worth it in the end though when you are cruising down the road and get the urge to hold the throttle wide open.

 

I run a Hooker Aerochamber, a lot of people think it has a Flowmaster, but it flows much better.

 

I have had a flowmaster for the life that I've owned my car and love it. Saying it doesn't sound deep/throaty is relative to who you're talking to, but I say they sound deep enough. As for flow, if it's a stock car, who cares. There are worse things hurting the exhaust flow than a flowmaster muffler.

And I'm getting a cutout when I get the headers in so not too worried about flow

 

I'm generally against the whole hillbilly redneck flowmaster thing and more of a magnaflow guy, but I gotta admit my 80 series flowmaster sounded damn good.

 

My 4" 30-series Flowmaster had no problem handing 800HP. Had a hell of a rumble. A buddy of mine put 1,150HP LT1 output through the same muffler, and found no increase in HP on the dyno when he pulled the 4" catback and just went to Borla XR1's on the collectors. It's just "fashionable" to bad-mouth Flowmaster.......

 

I think it's more fashionable for people to put a flowmaster on any car and think it's automatically cool or sounds at all decent. Many flowmaster cars are simply too loud. Loud is only cool for a few minutes on a street car.
