Exhaust leak....anyone recommend (tape, putty, ect?) ---
The guy before me had the y pipe to catback clamp welded shut (but just from the bottom), and I think the gasket is blown to peices so its leaking from the top ( near the floorboard) . I am about to swap out y pipes, so for a quick fix can I use a putty or a type of exhaust "tape" to get the sound to quiet down for now? I know I can go to the mechanics and get them to cut it and fix it correctly but that is money/time waisted on parts I wont have soon. THANKS ---
You can try JB weld or copper gasket maker. That might do the trick. I'm not positive on how well either of those will work that close to the block, where the heat is highest. But the copper gasket maker is made for pretty high temps I believe. So it's worth a shot, especially if it's only temporary!
ouch. JB Weld fails when temperatures go above 300 degrees so that wont work. Copper gasket maker, though good to 600 degrees, wont hold up to the pressure and will just blow off.
Your best bet is probably to enlist the help of a mechanic and use a cutoff wheel to grind out that weld. Then you can separate the pipes and replace the gasket.
