Question differences on headers

can someone explain to me what is the difference in header size. example shorties, mids, long tubes . I know that long tubes are your best bet, but what about the other two. IM a bit confused here my car would be a daily driven car with many modifications.

If you browse through some of the supporting vendors, you can get a visual idea of what the actual shapes look like of the three styles. The mids and long tubes would be your best bet in terms of flow.
