cat converter question
So I just joined the family and bought my first 4th gen F-Body. Its a beautiful black 97 Z28 with black 17 inch ZR1 rims. The car came with a SLP Loudmouth Exhast which is loud as hell but sounds amazing through the powerband. Also the car doesnt have any cats on it. I just so happen to live in an emissions county in georgia. My question is can i just throw one cat on there to pass or do i need dual cats like it originally came? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanx alot guys!!
Depends what laws they enforce, and now rigorous the inspection is.
Under Federal law, you can not change the number or location of the cats. If they rigidly enforce Federal standards, you have to have 2 cats and the have to be in the original locations.
The question is, do they even look? Do they do a tailpipe dyno emissions test? Or do they just plug into the computer, and if the SES light is not on, and there are no codes, do nothing else? You could probably pass a tailpipe test with a single cat. And you have to have some provision to prevent the SES light from coming on because the PCM tests for the presence of two cats by looking at the two after-cat O2 sensors that are supposed to be there. You would either have to put both O2 sensors after the single cat, use O2 sims in place of the after-cat sensors, or have the after-cat sensors "programmed out" of the PCM.

Good luck trying to find some-the ones you buy on-line can be hit or miss on reliability.
Call a shop and see what type of inspection they do. If its an all-out emissions test with visual you are screwed unless you put in stock-type replacement. If all they care about is the SES light then a set of sims should be just fine for you.
