aftermarket cats?

Today after finally getting my car straightened out. I took it down the road. I was sadly disappointed in the power it had (94 Z28). I though it should atleast be able to turn the tires over. I left my wallet at home so I went home to get it and while the car was sitting in the driveway it started rolling smoke from under the hood and through the slit where the parking break is into the cab of the car. I turned it off and looked under it to find my cat a bright orange/red color. So I assume this is the culprit. Just curious does anyone have any recommendations for an aftermarket high flow cat? Or should I weld the casing around a piece of pipe?

There is emissions testing where I live, but my truck has a gutted cat on it (87 GMC R1500 350 tbi) and it passes the test fine without one.

Universal cats are $50 on ebay. Your cat shouldn't glow unless you're running extremely rich or it's clogged, either of which would also explain the loss of power. It it was glowing it's probably melted and clogged now.

Glowing cats aren't a good thing...and a very good place to start when trying to figure out why your car is acting up.

Could always just take it off- ram a pipe thru it and knock all the guts out of it. It will be less obvious than trying to weld the casing onto something else.

Typically 95 and older cars are just a visual type of inspection but it varies from state to state. If you don't want to mess with it just get the aftermarket like Mike said and not have to worry about it.

Though I would update this if anyone reads and has a similar problem. I cut the cat off just to see if that would cure it, and it did (very loud now though ). I'm taking it tomorrow to have another put on. Thanks for the advise
