Wont shift

I am considering purchasing a 1997 gmc 1500 pickup with a 4l60e. The current owner says he was driving it and all of the sudden it would no longer shift. It was rebuilt roughly 100k miles ago. It still has first and reverse. I am not sure if the speedometer still worked or not(vss related). The ses light is on but I did not scan it. Does anyone know what the problem probably is. Would anything other than the vss cause it to completely quit shifting.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

The current owner said he had it scanned and the only code was the egr valve. I do not have a scanner and until i already purchased the truck I probably wouldnt be able to get it scanned. Usually does the vss cause it to go out all at once or does this sound like a more serious problem.
Thanks for the help.

Well it will not change gears with a bad vss some cars will at very high rpm but that would be the first place to look but there should be a code for that.

I would purchase it with the price based on a bad trans and go from there.

I will probably just pass on it because I really do not know how good everything else is. Thanks Performabuilt for the help.
