Will I break my 10 bolt?

Hello, i am getting my 3.73 gears installed within the next 2 weeks. I just purchased Motive 3.73 gears, an install kit which includes QUALITY pinion seal, crush sleeve, loctite thread locking compound, Dynatex R T V, gear setting pattern compound, brush, cover gasket(although we deleted it from the photo, you get a cover gasket), new Spicer brand heavy duty locking pinion nut, the very finest set of stackable "Super Shims" made, an assortment of pinion shim to get that pinion depth just right for the best gear tooth contact pattern, and a motive gear ring gear spacer with ring gear bolts. This is pretty much what i plan on getting done. I also have a A4, and i am worried about breaking the 10 bolt. You think it will happen? Thanks

Yes, it's just a matter of time and bolt-ons/mods before the 10-bolt goes. Sounds like your going all out with this so throw in a solid pinion spacer (replaces crush sleeve) and a rear support cover to get it to last a little longer. It's helped my last rear rebuild last over a year so far (longest yet, lol). Good luck.

Are you serious? Its really that weak. I dont plan on doing many more performance mods after the gears. Plan on saving up for an LS1. But all that stuff i listed comes in the install kit. And i also dont plan on taking it to the track also. Damn, i thought it would be able to hold the 3.73's just racing on the streets.

Mine's died twice now running low 14's 1st time and 13.3s the second. With A4 and basic mods. It all depends on the luck of the draw. Sticky tires will really help it break,

Im running low 10's and pulling 1.6 60fts on my bone stock 10 bolt with et streets. Wheel hop is what causes breakage. I know it is by no means as strong as a 10 bolt but its workin for me....

You mean as strong as a 12 bolt. But, i am probably running in the real low 14's. or real high 13's. So, i should be alright.

Re: Will I break my 10 bolt?

I would think twice about building up that 10 bolt. I've blown my 10 bolt 4 TIMES! I'm done with it... im getting th 12 bolt moser installed. You might get away with what your doing if you have an automatic... having a manual transmission im always harder on my rear end of course. So if you have a auto...try and get away with what your doing..maybe throw a girdle on there as well. but if it doesnt hold.... remember "i told you so"

I agree 110%. That's what I meant by luck of the draw. Some guys have 10-bolts that are taking all kinds of abuse and others, like mac_z_28 and myself have 10-bolts that seem to barely get down the block before blowing up.

By the way, my A4 chirps Nitto 315 DRs at 1/4 throttle + on 1-2 shift so it's not exactly 'easy' on the rear.

Re: Will I break my 10 bolt?

Yeah, but you all have more significant horsepower than I do. And, i am not running DR's or going to the track. This is a specific street car, with general XP tires, haha. Not the greatest tires so i dont plan on getting traction. I am a spirited driver, but i am well aware of the break in period of 500 miles or alittle more for brand new gears.
