I see a lot of them on the net now priced around $539 like this one:

http://www.twistmachine.com/products/shrifter.html

Anyone know how good they are or can you recommend a reputable one?

I don't have any recommendations or anything... just a question.

Why?

No, an aftermarket transmission controller would give you that. These paddles are essentially worthless without one, unless you're just too lazy to reach down and move the shifter, or you just like the way they look/feel/etc.

One would assume that you would make it work when buying one. Clearly intent is for shift control.

Some of them come with transmission controllers.

Why? Coolness factor. I might get a 6L80 or 6L50 as well so I would love to have a set. Or I might go T56...who knows. just assessing all my options.

My vote is for T56. If you insist on a paddle-shifted automatic, don't bother doing it to a 4L60E.
