Whining Sound at 130 mph

A periodic whining sound is coming from my 97 ss when cruising at 130 or 140 mph at 6th gear. I dont feel any vibrations, only the sound. Could it be a unbalanced driveshaft or any bad bearings from the transmission or rear end?

It's a siren in the distance trying to catch you.

Where do you "cruise" at a buck-forty?

Re: Whining Sound at 130 mph

I have places that I can cruise at those speeds.. but that's another story...

My first guess would be tires; at those speeds, any iffings of a bad tire will show up. It could be a driveshaft issue was well, the stock driveshaft it begining to reach it's critical speed where "issues" can happen and failure could happen.

You can try having it high-speed balanced, make sure it is trully high-rpm balanced, like atleast 5K rpms; the stock driveshaft begins to have issues from 5500 and up rpms and is hard if not impossible to balance the shaft for higher RPMs.

If you are going to be spending a lot of time up there; most people don't; then you'll need to invest in an aftermarket driveshaft like a Denny's. If you want to call Denny himself, he'll be happy to talk you through what your requirements are, and any of the real issues with the f-body driveshafts. I'm running one of his Nitrous Ready shafts balanced to over 8K rpms. My car is smooth as glass up past the 145 mark.

Under his location it says Istanbul which is in Turkey. The capital to be exact.

At that speed it could be a lot of things, even wind noise

Actually I don't cruise at those speeds all day long, tires are new and I'm just suspicious about the source of the sound. I think I should look for a new driveshaft.

I get whining at high speeds too. It's coming from the passenger seat. It sounds like my wife, saying "slooooow dooooown, you're goooooing too faaaaaast"
