Question whining sound when turning- WORKING ON DIFF NEED HELP!!!!!!!!

Whenever I turn I hear a whining sound that seems like it's coming from the rear end. I changed the rear diff fluid but that didn't do anything for me. I only hear the sound when I'm turning. I need some help diagnosing the problem please.

1994 Camaro Z28 - 5.7L, auto transmission.

Re: whining sound when turning

Did you add the limited slip additive from GM?It solves the clunking sound but I never heard of a whining sound before.Whining usually comes from the trans I think.My02.

Sorry, noise travels kinda funny in these cars.Usually the power steering makes what you described .Low on fluid or leaking power steering pump.Hope this helps.

Yeah I added the limited slip. The sound only happens when the car is moving. I can turn the wheel all day while sitting still and I don't get a whining sound. Any other ideas or things I can check?

Re: whining sound when turning

I'm probably not describing the noise correctly. It's a whining / rubbing sound that only happens when turning. The tighter the turn the louder the noise. It's also louder if i'm going faster. That's why I thought maybe it was something in the differential. There's no grinding or chattering just that whining / rubbing noise (the tires are free and clear and not rubbing on anything).

I thought maybe one of the rear hubs was going? I lifted the car and tried checking to see if one of the wheels would wobble but they seemed pretty tight.

Re: whining sound when turning

Are you sure it's not the screech from the worn brake pad alert finger on the brake pad, rubbing on the rotor?

Re: whining sound when turning

The brake pads are good. They have lots of meat left on them. Worn Posi? Man I hope not. The sound is not high pitched like brake screech. It's more like a groaning sound. the sound isn't a single constant note it almost sounds like whatever it is, is rotating.... I hate trying to explain sounds.....

So the whining sound is actually more of a groaning sound. 145,000 miles. My 'guess' would be a worn out or approaching the end of its' service life Auburn posi carrier. Since you didn't say/state if rearend lube was EVER serviced,I would drain and refill to see if the situation changes any.

Bummer. The fluid was pretty dark but there wasn't a lot of metal shavings that I noticed. Not sure on the burnouts, I can't remember the last time I laid down a serious burnout. I mostly just cruise around these days.

When I changed the oil i used regular gear oil and whatever the brand of limited slip was on the shelf for chevys. I'm going to try switching to synthetic gear oil and I'll also pick up the actual chevy limited slip from the stealership and see if that makes any difference.
