The Whine that never leaves!!!!!!!
The Whine that never leaves!!!!!!!
Here we go,
I ordered new gears, 4.10's and a new carrier,
We set it up with stock shim .030 on the pinion, pattern on gears looked good, .005 backlash, it whined on the gas pretty good, coast side was quite
We change it up to .029, pattern looks descent, set backlash at .007, it whines on gas so so and whines on coast so so,
We tried patterns at .024 which favored gas side but coast was off, then we tried .038 and pattern was way off...
I call richmond and the guy says that almost all of his 7.5 rear ends were setup with a shim for pinion between .037 and .044
So i finally break down and order a pinion depth checker, I set it up exactly on how richmond wants me too....of the number on their gears and everything.....
Final setup on specs by richmond, .039 pinion shim found by useing tool, and .010 backlash which is in richmond specs of .008 - .012
WHINES really loud,coast and accel......
Im lost???????? What Am I missing??????

Re: The Whine that never leaves!!!!!!!
Did u measure the pinion depth with a depth mic?? The gears should have the ideal depth ingraved on them. If u did all that and it was right then its just the brand of gear. I just bought some richmonds but havent drivin on them yet so I'll update on how they are. We got the pinion depth to within .002 of the ideal depth.
Re: The Whine that never leaves!!!!!!!
I had Richmond 3.73's back in 2003 that were like that (we tried re-shimming a couple times to no avail
) but the Richmond 4.10's I have now are almost as quiet as my factory 2.73's were, and we got it on the first shot!?

I have a friend with whiney Richmond 3.73's too. I really think it comes down to the cut of each gear set they produce...seems a lot of them are a little louder than others, and there's nothing you can do to completely get rid of the noise?
