Shift Kit

I was thinking of having a shift kit put on my 94Z this spring when I take it out of storage because i have to get the trans fluid changed anyway. What do you think i would pay for someone to install a shift kit, if they were already changing the trans fluid. Also what kind of benefits will i notice from one of these kits, i know it is supposed to extend the life of the tranny, and give quicker shifts, but how does it do that, and also if i put one in, could i safely throw it into 1st gear and shift it manually as well as downshift?

Re: Shift Kit

im no expert but they do make a nice difference in shift quickness and firmness, my trans was on its way out when i had mine put in, and it made it shift one time really REALLY well, but it killed it in that same shift... but now that its rebuilt it barks second at almost every shift and if im not mistaken it does it by beefing up some of the stock spring work that makes it shift slowly and smoothly, if you have one built right with a good shift kit you can make em shift as well as a good ole th-350 with a shift kit.. mines close but ive still got some bugs to work out with 2-3 shift.. as far as manually shifting through all gears, i see no gain out of it since it shifts close to redline anyway, unless you just want that manual feel from redlight to redlight without going hard on throttle... and as far as throwing it down to a gear on your own, i remmeber reading that its not good to do that somewhere but i may be wrong, especially after putting a shift kit in *shrug* sorry i cant be more hopeful but i hope that helps

Re: Shift Kit

Downshifting the transmissions is hard on it. Holding it to any gear isnt that hard, though you shouldnt do it in our transmissions because they wont shift immediatly when you slide the shifter. I am planning on getting a shift kit here next and 3.73 rear gears. When you install the shift kit, be sure to get a +2qt 700r4 pan with a drain plug. Our transmission pans have no drain plus so changing the fluid and filter is a PITA. The extra fluid will also help keep the transmission colder and extened the life of it.

Re: Shift Kit

i just got my installed last week with eaton posi, 4:11 gear and a vig 2800 stall.even if your trans is good but has some miles on it look into at least a soft parts rebuild.i have seen many trans go when a shift kit got installed on a trans that was in good shape before the install but had some miles on it.and also really give it some thought on which setting to run.stock gears you can get away with the race setting but with bigger gears toss around the lighter settings.i get no traction from 1st to 2nd and neck snap and a bark of tires from 2nd to 3rd.

Re: Shift Kit

You got it backward, the Trans-Go Shift kit when installed correctly, will do "no harm" to the unit, in fact will improve the chances of the shifts occuring when they should. If you add the spacers to the 2nd gear accumulator, you will make the part throttle shifts firmer (not necessary), and this can shorten the transmission life.
