When does the converter in my '93 lock up?

I am going to the track this weekend and was curious if there is anything I can do with my trans to run a little quicker. I know the converter locks up in 3rd, and if I touch the brake pedal, it unlocks. Does the converter stay unlocked in 3rd at WOT?
I have read some stuff about a resisitor to keep the clutch unlocked, but I am not sure if it is necessary, or how to do it. I know you can ground the A and F terminals and lock up the converter, but that seems more like a dyno trick.

The converter should not be able to lock at full throttle

So at part throttle in 3rd it locks up, and at some point in throttle travel it unlocks?

Pretty much. If you wanted to you could manually lock it up, but assumignng it's the stock TC you will burn it up because it'll never grab at WOT. Even if it did there is so little slippage with a stock converter I doubt you would see any increase in MPH at all. Usually the guys that do this have a decent amount of power and a loose converter with a multidisc clutch meant for taking that kind of abuse.
