I was looking at my car today trying to find an oil leak, and i noticed something on top of my rear diff. I dont know what it is, but it is plastic and it slides in and out freely. And theres quite a good amount of oil that has been spraying out of it. Anyone able to help me???

 

Not sure what that plastic thing is, but are you sure it is not your pinion seal that's been spraying the fluid all over?

leaking rear pinion seal is very common with LS1 F-bodies.

how would i figure that out w/o taking it to a shop?
in case you cant tell im kindof in the learning process.

 

If you don't have traction control, there's a speed sensor in the top of the housing, which should be held down by an M6 screw.

 

is it like an almost greenish color? and thats what i meant the housing...sorry. and its on the passenger side. would that be it. If so, would it cause oil to spray all over the back underside of my car?

 

Thats the vent tube.

 

why would the vent tube spray oil everywhere?

 

a vent tube is to vent air/oil so it doesn't build to much pressure

 

is the vent tube supposed to just slide completely out of the housing though??? The oil must be from something else because theres like mass amounts of oil....maybe ill just have a shop look at it.

 

Yes it can just be pulled out, who changed the fluid last? If it was severly over filled it will build up pressure and come out the vent.

 

It's very common for the vent to leak fluid. Pull it out and clean it up with brake clean or something simular. Take a small piece of cloth soaked with the cleaner and clean the hole that the vent fits into. When everything is dry put some silicone sealer around the base of the vent near the shoulder and reinstall it. It won't leak any more.
