Question What Gears Do I Have???

up until now, i've always thought my car had stock gears when i bought the car nearly 2 years ago. but when i went to the track i did very well (timeslip) and now i'm thinking maybe i have more done to my car than i really know?

is there any way you can tell what gears i have by this information? i took picture notes of the different rpm at different constant speeds and heres what i came up with... and keep in mind its an A4

speed-----rpm
50ish------1800ish
60---------2000
65ish-------2100ish
70---------2250
75---------2400
80---------2500
90ish------2800ish

and i believe when i floored it through first gear, it switched to 2nd at around 40mph. is this enough information for someone to know if i have stock gears or performance?

thanks,
Eric

you could estimate what your gears are, but you'd need the wheel+tire diameter too

Compare your figures against the calculator at www.f-body.org/gears/ and see how they match up. The calculator lets you change tire diameter/gears, etc. and recalculate too.

thanks, i think that helped a lot... i think i have found my answer but still very confused. i ordered a tune from pcmforless and on the gears i told him they were stock for my VIN, would it make a difference if i find out i dont have the gears my car came with?

i ended up with picking 94-97 fbody A4 in the top box, and then mixed and matched the different axel ratios. my car has been tuned (for stock gears?) by pcmforless and now redlines at 6k so i assume i switch that box as well? i got a good match when the axel ratio was "3.42"

did i do this right? and is this safe enough to say these are the gears i have on my car? my door jamb says "GU5" which matches up with 3.23 on the FAQ. does this also mean my gears have been changed?

thanks for all the help and information

Are you sure your converter was locked up when you checked MPH against rpm? Are your tires stock diameter?

What Rich said - and that calculator also assumes the speedo has been corrected if gears were changed. Maybe get someone next to you on the highway at 70 on their car, then see what your RPMs are. My VIN says GU2, but have 3.42's in the car now - after correcting the speedo/tuning I use that calculator to make sure it took and it's spot on.
