what gears to buy

so i have a 95 camaro z28 auto and i'm wantin to get some gears installed. but i have some questions maybe you all could help me answer. i've searched the archives all night and now my eyes are burning, i'm tired, and i still have no answers....

what series carrier do i have? and how can i tell?

do all stock f-bodys have 7.5" 10 bolt rear ends?

who has the best deals on gears?

are 4:11 streetable?

other than ring and pinion, what other parts are required for an install?

where the hell in omaha could i get some gears installed by someone who has done it before, (since Red Roadster went under)?

oh and how have anyof you modified your LT's from vibrating under the car?

Thanks in advance. i appreciate your help.

You could have 2:73 2-series rear in all likelyhood as most auto came stock with. Or 3:23 3-series rear if the original owner paid for this special option. Check your RPO codes for the rear ID. And all are 10-bolts with a 7.625 ring gear.

If you can select 1st gear, you probably have 3.23 (RPO GU5), and a 3-series carrier. If you can't select 1st gear, you will have 2.73 (GU2), and a 2-series.

You need the 7.50/7.625" gears

Check the "supporting vendor index" at the top of the page, for people who sell, AND support this forum. You will also need an "install kit", and may want to consider an aluminum cover with pre-load bolts.

Go to an online gear calculator, and see if you can live with the RPM you will see on the freeway with 4.10s'. To use the gear calculator, you will have to enter the O/D ratio for the 4L60E, which is 0.70, and your tire size (25.65" w/ 245/50-16; 26.2" w/ 235/55-16).

Re: what gears to buy

I've got 3.73 (ooops had, and I will have them again by the end of the week I hope) and I find they are just perfect. For the drag racing I can run right off the end of the track in 4'th and for lapping days, I can wind out to about 120mph on a straight in 4'th. Once you hit the overdrive on a straight you will wish you had 3.73 too.

Re: what gears to buy

I've heard a lot of good things about GM/Motive Gears and I'm getting them next. I jsut finished up with a set of Richmonds, and I hated them. From day one they have been noisy, at high speed the car vibrated, and the damn things just broke on me. I've never once done a clutch dump. I only make about 400 hp so it's not like they are getting beat to ****. I think they are crap. There are plenty of others who have had equally poor experiences with Richmond.
