What Gear Noise is Acceptable?

I have a Moser 12 Bolt in my 94Z with a six speed. Recently, I had Motive 3:73 gears installed. There is no noise through 4th gear but I get a slight howling noise in 5th and 6th gear from 50 to about 65 mph. At 70 mph in sixth gear I do not get any noise.

Should I expect some gear noise from my Moser setup? Backlash is set at about .008.

Note: I have a lot of aftermarket suspension items such as sub frame connectors, pan hard rod, trailer arms and a polyurethane rear transmission mount. All of the suspension items are from Hotchkis. Addituionally, I have a 3 inch steel driveshaft from Denny's Driveshaft.

Please advise.

Thanks!

A small amount of whine is more than acceptable. It's when the gears begin to howl is when you should suspect that something is wrong.

My 10 bolt and my friends 12 bolt whine all the time, and both have been whining for about 2 years now.

Both are fine.

It's subjective. You are the best judge of what is "acceptable". It's a rare aftermarket install that doesn't have some whine though.
