hy guys noticed my 94 z is starting to have a loose pinion gear and its getting noisy so its time for a new set of gears. now i got 3.42 gears in it right now and i was thinking about going with 3.73 or 4.10 with an a4 nto sure what is the best yet give me an input on it and i do have the lt4 hot cam kit in it and planning on building a 396. now what is the best gear for your money i was thinking richmond but is there another set of gears that a guy could get cheaper let me know c.j.

With the 396ci., and you are going to use this on the street, then 3.23's or 3.42's would be the way to go. With 3.73's or 4.10's you will need very sticky tires to take advantage of that gear with that motor, otherwise you will go up in smoke very easily. Take a realistic look at how you drive, and what you want to use for tires here? Remember the torque converter will make the biggest difference in ET when compared to a gear change.

I've had 3.73 Motive gears in a B-body (Caprice/Roadmaster wagons)
Dead quiet, very fast with camed LT1.
I didn't like it every much on the highway beyond 70, the LT1 engine got too noisy as you are turning 2400-2600 rpms. Also MPG drops off like a rock between 70-80.
My favorite gear is what you have right now, 3.42, as it's the best balance of power and MPG, with 4L60E anyway. With the stick, it's a different game altogether and you need 4.10 at least.
