What was the 1993 Automatic Tranny
I have been arguing with a local shop who claims to build great racing trannys he says that 93`s came with the 700r4 in some of the first 93`s that came out. I had always thought that the entire drivetrain was changed for the 4th gens anyone know for sure before he yanks my buddies transmission and tries to put a 700r4 in it.
the automatic in the 93 is called a "4L60" which is the exact same thing as a 700r4
94 and up uses an electronically controlled valve body and is known as the "4L60-E"
your tranny guy is not off his rocker, hes just not up to date on the correct terms

yes fo all intent and purpose the 93 is a 7004 , it was called a 4l60e due to some minor wiring changes and the addition of and additional check ball location , as far as external the only difference in the early versions had a square connector and the 93 had a round one but not like the 4l60e small .
But basically they are correct its a 700r4

Yes, the '93's use the 700 (4L60)..BUT...you have to use a '93 unit in a '93 Camaro, unless you change the valve body, and plate. The '93 unit uses 3 pressure switches on the valve body for lock-up, which neccessitates a 5 pin round plug. This is different from all previous 700's that had a 4 pin square plug.
There are some subtle differences internally in a '93 unit. The reverse input housing is the same as a 4L60E, instead of a 700. The '93 units also had the weaker SKF (French) input sprag, and the valve body takes an extra checkball. this was done to compensate for using the large feed hole 4L60E reverse input housing. This obviously made it neccessary to use a '93 specific seperator plate, to match the valve body.
