Weird rattle

My car has a horrible rattle in it whenever it is in reverse or when its in gear and just sitting. I dont think that its an exhaust problem because if i put the car in neutral it will go away or if im going down the road i at least cant hear it but that may be because my car is too loud. Anyone have any ideas?

Re: Weird rattle

I would not think that it is a trans problem. Reason being is that you said that it does it sitting still. Nothing is turning here except the pump and tc.I would look at all your mounts and exhaust. Something is causing your rattle. Don't forget to check your torque arm mount as well at the trans. Maybe get the car on four stands and do a break torque and see if you can pin point it. Try to get the stands under the rear end so that the drive line angel is the same as if it were on the ground. Good luck Vince.

Re: Weird rattle

if your car is a manual it could be your throwout bearing... check to see if the noise comes and goes when you pump the clutch in neutral.

I thought i had a bad throwout bearing once, but it actually ended up being one of my catalytic converters going bad. Get under your car and punch your cat(s) and see if you get a rattle out of em. if you do, a simple hack sawing will take care of that pretty quick.

Re: Weird rattle

Check for loose heat shields, they tend to be big and flat and do a good job of amplifying sound when just a little loose…Does the rattle change with engine speed? Vehicle speed? More pronounced in a given gear? Or when the brakes are applied?

Re: Weird rattle

Well my cat is really old and I plan on cutting it off soon any ways so hopefully that is it. Yeah that rattle seems to go away when it stops idleing everything sounds good when im going down the road. But whenever im pulling out in reverse the rattle is so loud now. And another thing whenever i put on the brakes i sorta hear a squeaking sounds coming from the back.

i am having the same problem....... so i had some one sit in the car and put it in reverse, and i crawed under the car and saw that the y pipe was shaking quit abit. i dont think it is the y-pipe mount. but i thought the engine might be running alittle ruff at idle speed becuase my car idles at 450 rpm when in gear and at a stop so i just hiked the idle speed up to 600 rpm and it does not rattle anymore
