Used pinion bearing preload?

Did a R&P swap. The gears were super quiet yesterday but today I have slight wine on decelaration. I am convinced that it is loose bearing preload.

I am using the Ratech solid spacer and not the crush sleeve. The used bearing preload was around 4-6" pounds, seems light to me. You could feel a very slight amount of drag when turning it by hand.

I can pull it apart and remove maybe .002-.003" from the pinion preload shim pack. This will definitelt tighten it up a bit.

What is the correct used bearing preload for 10 bolts?
Do loose pinion bearings sound like the poblem with decel whine?

They are definitely loose then, will this cause slight whine on decel only?

Re: Used pinion bearing preload?

Well the pinion preload was too light. I ended up removing .008" of preload shim to get about 15" inch pounds of preload. There is a bit less whine on decel.

Maybe the light preload abnormally wore the gears a bit, I put maybe 30 miles on them with this light preload. The pattern was perfect so I dont see how this could happen so fast. Maybe I am wrong.

There is only a trace of whine on accel.
I only drove it a few miles tonight, maybe it will get better as time goes on, but I doubt it.
