UH OH, What The .....?

So I was driving down the road and all of a sudden a heard this loud noise like a spring snaping or something and I also felt something different in my feet. The car still drives ok but the only thing I can feel different is in the clutch. Ususally, the clutch feels tight and firm but now there is a 1-2 inch lag where nothing happens and then the clutch feels firm from there on out. What happened? Do I need a new clutch?

and how hard is it to fix? Do you need to take out the clutch? If it is not fixed ASAP, what else could go wrong, if anything? Does it cause any other problems?

It's under the dash. Goes from the clutch pedal to a point on the steering column/pedal assembly to help pull the pedal back up.
