transmission tragedy update - A4 guys inside please!

in reference to that thread.

I got the fluid to what I believe is the correct level.

The car shifts firmly now, and seems to be almost as good as new. The 1-2 shift is hard but not as hard as it originally was, the 2-3 and 3-4 are normal.

What are your opinions on this? Keep driving it more to get more ATF circulating, and get any air out of the system?

Add a little more ATF?

I don't suspect any internal damage but I am not 100% sure

Yes I would keep driving it for a while and see what happens. From your previous thread, it did not seem like you drove it anywhere when you had the fluid loss, so i don't see how you could have done any damage. Be thankful it was not as serious as it could have been.

If the governor cover came off all at once, you might be OK. I've seen this happen quite a bit. If it came off gradually, and you lost fluid over a longer time span, you may have hurt something. Usually loss of fluid will show up in the forward clutches first. Do you have any engagement problems?

Most of the time these covers come off is in 4WD vehicles. The ONLY time the governor applies pressure to the cover is when your turning the output shaft at high RPM's...IN REVERSE! They do it more in 4WDs because people go alot of high RPMs, in reverse, when they're stuck.

by engagement problems, do you mean the transmission engaging when I press on the gas? or do you mean shifting it into 1st from park?

Is there any delay when you move the shifter from PARK to REV., or PARK to DRIVE?

I've always had a short delay. Even after a rebuilt tranny. Off topic...I see your from elkton. I'm from Havre de Grace, about 15 min. from you. Any good shops local that know a thing or two about these cars?

Um...I work at All-Trans, in Newark, Delaware. I've been building there for 7 years. Before that, I was at Deltrans, in Newark for 7 years.
PM me, and let me know what you need.

Frank,

I checked it out, there is a very minor delay from Park to 1st, but that seems normal to how it has always acted
