transmission swap
Re: transmission swap
Heres a mini-guide
REMOVAL:
Jack up the car rather high from the axles (if you are on the frame it might pull the E-Brake cable locking up the rear brakes and you wont be able to take off the driveshaft) and put it in neutral and remove the dipstick rod.
Drain the tranny fluid by removing the tranny pan and take the shifter linkage out while you are there. This in not necessary, but will make it cleaner. You wanna put the pan back on after you drain it for support.
Remove the driveshaft from the rear and slide it out the output shaft.
Unbolt the top bolt holding the TQ arm into place on the drivers side of the tranny above the output shaft. It will fold open. You will see what I mean.
Take the ground off the battery and remove the starter.
Then remove the converter cover on the bottom side of the tranny near the engine oil pan.
With some vice grips, hold the flexplate in place and remove the 4 bolts that hold the converter to the flexplate. Make sure it is in neutral or else you cant spin it.
Put a jack under the tranny pan w/ a board or old textbook to keep from denting the pan and so it will support it when you remove the crossmember.
Then unbolt the 4 bolts on the tranny crossmember and the 1 for the tranny mount.
Then remove the cooler lines (there are 2, label which goes where) and all the electronics. If you cant do it, lower the jack on the tranny to get more access.
Then you are ready to take off the bellhousing bolts. There should be 7, i think. Once you get those, lower the tranny with the jack until you get the dipstick out. There might be a bolt holding the dipstick onto the block (not 100% sure).
Then slowly pull the tranny out and backwards using the jack to center the tranny and have 2 people to support it. You might need a little prying to get it off the mounting studs.
INSTALL:
Put about a quart of tranny fluid in the converter and then plug up both cooler lines with something plastic to keep it from draining out when you pour about a half quart of tranny fluid into the tranny via the input shaft. This primes the pump. Remove the plastic before you install the cooler lines obviously.
Holding the tranny at a 30-45* angle, mount the tq converter into the input shaft. You will need to spin it about 5 times or until it is fully mounted. It will kinda pop into place.
When you stab the tranny into place, you want to put a string or wire in some of the bell housing holes to keep the converter in place. Then once you mount it on the studs, just pull that wire/string out.
Then basically do everything in reverse order and TQ everything down to spec. Put blue lock tite on the converter and bellhousing bolts. Red Lock Tite will be HELL to get off if you have to do it again.
Just take your time and think about things logically.
