Transmission solenoid

My dad took the car to a transmission shop today, see thread titled transmission smoked?? for details.
Guy at the shop drove it and hooked it up to the scanner and said the problem was a solenoid.
He wants $150 to change it, autozone sells them for $30. How hard are they to change? They are on the outside of the transmission right?

Is it the torque converter clutch solenoid or the on/off solenoid?

I ordered the TCC solenoid. On what part of the transmission is that located?
