Transmission slips

I'll be driving down the road and go to nail it and the transmission slips real bad. I can change gears with the shifter and seems to grab and go. Also from a dead start if I nail it the transmission slips and the rpms go through the roof. But if I drive under normal conditions such as regular stop and go traffic conditions, its fine. Whats up with that?
