Transmission problems
i just bought a 99 Z28 and after having it for a day i totally screwed my tranny. i bought it off of a friend who couldnt afford it, i had riden with him in the car a lot and he would downshift from 6 to 3 and 5 to 3. most of the time going down 1- 3 gears. he also took it down and ran it at the track a few times. anyways i was driving the car and i downshifted from 5 to 3 and as i was shifting into 4 i grinded it and i heard a really bad noise. i left it in neutral and was cruisin at about 65-70 mph. i tried to put it back in gear (6th) and it wouldnt go in. then i tried 5 and 4 and still wouldnt go in. so i pull over, then when im put it in first to get goin i hear a knocking/ grinding sound before i could let all the way off the clutch. when this sound happens i cant accelerate either. do u guys think this happened just from me missing 4th or was it from all the hard downshifting that was done to that tranny prior to me getting it??? when i got the tranny taken apart to get rebuilt they said that if was totally screwed and i might as well get a brand new one if i was to rebuild it. i am getting a used rebuilt one now, how reliable do u think that is???
Mine is a rebuilt (who ever had the car before me could never hit 3rd because that's the gear that flew out taking 4 syncros with it) anyways, the rebuilt was done under extended warranty through pontiac dealership at an independent shop. So far it lasted longer than the original. Original had about 37K on it, since then I racked up over 40K miles on it and still shifts like new.
when my tranny went my transmission guy said that first and second were gone and most of my synchros were gone too. do u downshift more than a gear?? u think a rebuilt tranny can handle goin from 5 to 3??
